The SmartMart is a drive-up store where people order on a touchscreen and pay using cash or card. One that has managed to survive from the 1990s is the SmartMart, also in Memphis. Other systems have emerged over the years. The system, which was not fully automatic, proved mechanically unreliable. Stock personnel then put the selected items onto conveyor belts that took the products to the cashier for checkout. In the 1930s, Clarence Saunders, founder of the Memphis, Tennessee-based Piggly Wiggly supermarket chain, introduced the "Keedoozle." Customers viewed products behind glass-enclosed display cabinets, then inserted a key into a corresponding keyhole near the display cabinet to identify the product they wanted, according to Wikipedia. They can also be stores that the consumer enters and buys products, such as Amazon Go. They can be free-standing terminals where consumers purchase products from shelves, similar to a vending machine. Other automated retail concepts also exist, and some observers think recent developments – such as more versatile inventory supply chains, the growth of "food deserts," and the rising cost of labor – have created a new demand for automated retail formats.Īutomated stores come in different formats. The items are in turn billed to an authorized account accompanied by a detailed email receipt.Īmazon Go can be viewed as a variation of a concept that has existed in the U.S. Shoppers scan themselves into the store using an app, shop as normal, remove items from a store shelf, place items in a shopping bag and leave the store. The concept has been more successful in Europe, which has denser populations and higher labor costs.Īmazon recently introduced Amazon Go, which allows shoppers to enjoy the convenience of shopping without the need to stop and check out. Fully-automated stores offering food and convenience items have existed for decades, but in the U.S., they have never gained traction. One retail concept that stands to benefit from these changes is the automated convenience store. Traditional retail, meanwhile, becomes more capital intensive, largely on account of rising labor costs. The Internet of Things is unleashing new capabilities for automated retailing to meet the needs of consumers and businesses alike – more economically and efficiently than traditional brick and mortar retailers.Ĭapabilities such as remote machine monitoring, interactive touchscreens, near-field communications, robotics, identity verification, video surveillance etc.

He was surprised (like me when I saw it) that Redline made a freestyle cruiser. Eagle-eyed Trent spotted it at a bike shop in Hayward, CA. Instead it was a picture posted by our good friend, Trent Brocker. In most cases that would mean I stumbled across it while strolling the aisles of the show.īut, as you’ll recall, Redline wasn’t at the show this year. I got the heads up about the bike while attending Interbike earlier this month. The cool colorway, white & copper, initially caught my eye but this bike has a lot more going for it than its good looks…GT has really put some innovative thinking into this bike ( especially the frame) and it’s definitely worth a second look. Kitted out with a mix of GT, ProMax and Alienation components this bike is ready for battle. Geometry-wise, the Speed Series Pro 24 lines up as follows: Paired with a set of tapered GT Pro Race Forks, this is a nice starting point for a tricked out speed machine. We’re talking alloy hydro-formed and butted tubes, internal quick release seat clamp wedge, a CNC/forged quick change dropout system, BB30, and a tapered 1-1/8″-1-1/2″ integrated head tube. There’s a lot going on beneath that white colorway. That being said, the frame is classic in color only. Starting out with a classic white frame, it’s set off by a nice mix of copper ano components…a nice modern touch we’ve seen more recently on the Redline Asset 24. GT really stepped up the looks of their high-end race cruiser, the Speed Series Pro 24, for 2016. I would have liked to see a full-blown test/review but this is a reasonably good substitute.Ĭheck out the video for yourself of Seth putting the bike to the test (and just try to avoid going down the rabbit hole of checking out Seth’s videos….I always end up 3 or 4 deep when I click on one). The bike also looked pretty much stock (save for the pedals which looked like blue composite pedals)…so that’s even more of a plus. The Redline looked like it was none the worse for wear after the repeated attempts and bails. He even makes repeated attempts on a 360 before landing one smooth. Heck, there’s even a disaster…shoutout to the mid school! (Or is that old school?) I’ve always wanted to see one of these completes in action and Seth did a great job of showing what the Asset 24 was capable of.Īt the tail end of the video ( starting at 7:02) Seth has a session on the new workbench skatepark and he proceeds to bust out a good amount of moves and jibs on the Redline. You might recall from previous posts that the geo of the Asset 24 is very close (essentially the same) as the ever-popular S&M ATF 24. Seth Alvo, of Seth’s Bike Hacks fame, shredding on a Redline Asset 24 on his Workbench Skatepark in his new (at the time) garage. I spotted this a while back as a suggested video on YouTube. The player can fire at the Maledict from this position while safe from the raining meteors, although they will need to dodge around whenever the Maledict flies off to avoid his flamewall attack, or they could save the Artifact for phase 2 of the battle and use it to slow time to allow the player to throw the meteors back at the Maledict.ĭuring the course of the battle, the wings of the Maledict will deteriorate further if the player damages him more. The best time to attack the Maledict is when he hovers over the skull-shaped mountain and summons Forgotten Ones at this time, he flies in a predictable pattern and remains in view for the longest period of time.įighting the Maledict with the BFG-9000 with the Artifact in use.ĭuring the second phase of the battle, there is a "safe spot" from the Maledict's meteor shower attack, right inside the curve of one of the giant skull's horns, just to the left of the Maledict's perch. The Artifact's berserk power also increases the damage done to the Maledict by the player's weapons, allowing them to wear down his considerable 2500 hit points much more quickly. Taking advantage of Helltime power, the player can fire at the Maledict using his strongest weapon (preferably the BFG 9000) with greater accuracy. To defeat the Maledict, the player needs to use the Artifact. He also continues to use flamewall attack, which deals massive damage to the player. His health is reset to 5000, and he proceeds to retreat to the giant skull-shaped volcano on the battlefield and rains down fireballs from the sky. He also can hover at the edge of the platform and spew a spread of several fireballs at the player, and jet across the platform leaving behind a flamewall stream in his wake much like that of the Arch-vile.Īfter the Maledict's health has been reduced to less than 25%, the second phase of the battle begins. In the first phase, the airborne Maledict has 2500 hit points and summons Forgotten Ones to attack the player. In the final cutscene, the Maledict appears unharmed by the Marine's guns, but he is eventually slain by the Marine using the Artifact. The Maledict can withstand multiple BFG and Rocket hits even when augmented by the Berserk ability of the Artifact. While not invulnerable to conventional weaponry, the Maledict is extremely potent in combat because his attacks penetrate the Invulnerability granted by the Artifact. RoE's ending cinematic shows that the demon is very large compared to humans. Betruger's head is fused to the creature's tongue and only appears when the Maledict needs to speak. He emits a loud, piercing scream and has empty eye sockets. The Maledict appears as a mostly skeletal wyvern with a large set of wings, two legs with clawed feet, a long tail, and a head similar to a Forgotten One. Not just powering that phone, but other connected devices in your house. However, Meta argues it should be exempt because Messenger is a part of Facebook, not a standalone messaging platform, according to The Verge. The smart home power features look awesome, and it's a really clever way to rethink what the "power" button does on your phone. If Meta falls under the EU’s strict new antitrust rules, they might have to make Messenger work with other messaging services. I'm a 'smart home power user' so I'll use that a lot. It doesn't play it, but it's annoying to have it there.īreaking your smart home stuff out of Google Home / Smart area into OS-wide controls is good too. Like, when I get into my car I frequently have my car display whatever I was last watching on YOuTube in the media controls in my dashboard. and often times if my phone connects to a neew bluetooth device, it'll start that up again. That's a constant annoyance of mine, like I'll watch a YouTube video and I'll be done with it, close the app, and then the youtube media notification controls will still be in that control area and I either cant' swipe that away until I close YOuTube again, or I just have to ignore it. The notifications messaging stuff sounds like a great improvement. Facebooks head of Messenger, told The Information. There may be messaging fragmentation on the iPhone, but at least the default experience when you're texting other iPhone users is pretty good. As WhatsApp officially joins the Facebook fold, WhatsApp founder Jan Koum has joined Facebooks. Or, if you're lucky, it's RCS - but even then your encryption options are substandard. Facebook is back online after a massive outage that also took down Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Oculus ‘Networking issues’ took the sites down just before noon ET Richard Lawler Alex. That's a problem for both Android and iOS users, but it feels more acute on Android because the default option is a bad, broken experience: SMS. In some parts of the world, that statement doesn't obtain because everybody uses WhatsApp, but at least here in the US, messaging is fragmented across iMessage, SMS/RCS, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and any number of other apps I could list here. Meta’s broadcast channels, previously available for Instagram and WhatsApp, will be coming to Facebook and Messenger in the coming weeks, according to a Meta blog post. RCS aside, the problem is that there are too many texting apps and you can't really convince all your friends and loved ones to just choose one. Now, it's going for something more "open" by trying to get all carriers worldwide (and maybe Apple) to upgrade from SMS to RCS in a consistent and universally compatible way - and also make it possible to layer strong encryption on top of it. The difference between Google's messaging mess and the overall mess on smartphones is simply that Google blew several opportunities to win at mobile messaging. A player must throw down his hand face-up, so other players may verify, and declare "misdeal" before he or his team has bid.īidding: Each player decides how many tricks he will be able to take. Sometimes a misdeal is also called if a player is dealt no spades or 7 or more of any other suit. If one player prematurely runs out of cards, that is, either extra cards were dealt elsewhere or one or more cards are missing, the hand is considered void and the deal passes. These are referred to as "Power checks", and act as a counter-balance to blind bids. Some players allow a limited number of cards, generally at most three to each player, to be dealt face up, provided at the end of the deal each player has the same number of face-up cards. The players then pick up their cards and arrange them by suits. The entire deck is dealt one at a time, face down, beginning on the dealer's left. The Deal: The first dealer is chosen by a draw for high card, and thereafter the turn to deal proceeds clockwise. Object of the game:To accumulate the required number of points points are accrued by winning at least the number of tricks bid in each hand. There is another variation, when playing with the Jokers, the 2 of diamonds and the 2 of spades are high trumps, the A, K, and so on. There is a variation where all 2s count as the highest spades, in which the order is 2 of Hearts (highest card), 2 of Clubs, 2 of Diamonds, 2 of Spades, then all the rest of the spades, A through 3. The Deck: Standard 52 card deck, can also be played with jokers Number of Players: Two to five four is the most common number of players in teams of two ("Partnership spades") However, since the mid 1990's Spades has become popular internationally because of its easy availablity in on-line card rooms on the Internet. Until recently it has been little known elsewhere, except in a few places where American troops were stationed, for example in parts of Germany. Spades was invented in the United States of America in the 1930's and is played quite widely in that country. Spades is a trick-taking game somewhat akin to Hearts but more closely related to bridge. I used the CCK too, but the one I have wouldn't charge the iPad while using it. And I always seemed to forgot how I set it up after not using it for a bit! And accidently clicking something and losing all connection while using it That won't happen with this - just too easy. My iPad is very much a part of my studio now! But I am a little jealous of how well it integrates on Mac. However I have had great results just using Link, and/or USB MIDI over the CCK. Yeah sadly for us over here in PC land it's not possible (not without a third party app like Studiomux which is.not stable at the best of times). You can send any iOS app audio's out - iMaschine, Figure, YouTube etc and midi out from apps that can do so. This may be common knowledge, I dunno, but a search here didn't show this up. I use all the Topaz AI products, though I didnt try Photo AI today. The square crops emphasize the difference. Topaz products, then download a fresh version. When a picture needs only good denoising and a little extra sharpening, DeNoise is still king. I honestly hope that if Topaz ultimately intends to go all-in on Photo AI that they make it selectable. That was all that was needed, and batched through the whole thing in half an hour or so. Except for gnarly noise, they were otherwise fine, so I tried true and trusty DeNoise AI. It did a fine job but took a long time and I had 160 images to finish. I have a flash and know how to use it, but I hate the look and would rather tame some noise than destroy the look of the ambient. Huge room, hundred or more people, entertainers, speeches, awards. I shamelessly shoot at 6400 and higher when needed, and I use half-frame APS-C cameras so things can get a little noisy. I am impressed with all of them, but I only use Photo AI when I need what it offers, It is indeed an amalgam of the earlier three, but it has some issues yet, one being that it is doing so much at once that it's slower. Personally, I like retaining the control that DeNoise AI gives me. If Photo AI comes out on top, does it make DeNoise AI entirely redundant? And if DeNoise AI wins, does it mean Topaz Labs has wasted its time on the new Photo AI? Give the video a look and let me know your thoughts. Whatever the result, you can only deduce that there must be some form of cannibalization going on. It's a fascinating experiment, simply because it's putting a company's products up against each other. That brings us to this great video by Anthony Morganti, in which he puts the new Photo AI up against DeNoise AI, to see which one works better at noise removal. It sounds amazing, but how does it compare when used against its own individual products? Very recently, however, Topaz Labs released Photo AI, which is an all-in-one software that removes noise, sharpens, and increases resolution with a single click. If you bought them as a bundle, you still had to use them independently of each other. You could (and still can) buy them all separately, or buy them as part of a bundle. The first two are self-explanatory in what they do, while Gigapixel AI adds resolution to an image, which can really help if you want to print an image at large sizes. Until a short time ago, Topaz Labs' products were separate, in that you had DeNoise AI, Sharpen AI, and Gigapixel AI. Below the changelog are a list of issues we’re already aware of.If you're not familiar with Topaz Labs' editing products, for a long while now they've been up towards the top of the tree for correcting noise in an image and sharpening as well.
